For the first time ever, Mound Westonka High School Theatre will have the opportunity to take center stage at the Minnesota State High School League One Act Play competition.

For the first time ever, Mound Westonka High School Theatre will have the opportunity to take center stage at the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) One Act Play competition Jan. 27 at Chaska High School.

MWHS will compete at subsections on Jan. 27, along with Chaska, Chanhassen, Shakopee, Prior Lake, Minnetonka and Eden Prairie. The top three one-acts at subsection will move on to sections.

The public is invited to a free public performance of “Kodachrome” on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 6:30 p.m. at the Westonka Performing Arts Center. Doors will open at 5:45 p.m. and seating will begin at 6 p.m. Following a 10-minute set-up, the run time for the play is 35 minutes.

“Kodachrome”, a poignant and visually striking play written by Adam Szymkowicz, explores the themes of love, loss and the moments that shape our lives. The story revolves around a small town that the audience explores through the lens of the narrator, the town photographer Suzanne. Through her words and photos, the audience peeks into the lives of people in her town to catch glimpses of romance in all its stages of development. A play about love, nostalgia, the seasons, and how we learn to say goodbye, the play has been praised for its emotional depth and unique storytelling, making it a fitting choice for the theater group's debut at the competition.

The cast and crew traveling to the contest includes 18 students, while additional students serve as a home-based crew helping with set and prop preparations.

The one-act play contest features high school theaters from around Minnesota through various subsection and section competitions and ends the season with a state festival in February.

Parents, friends and community members are also invited to support the subsection performance at Chaska High School on Jan. 27, where MWHS is scheduled to perform at 4:10 p.m. MSHSL charges their own admission at the door.

“Kodachrome” is co-directed by Jamie Harms and Joe Lawrence.
